International Red Cross allowed to visit Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar – family speaks of hope

A spokesman for Aung San Suu Kyi's party, Arnaud de Baecque, said that rare photos of the prisoner had been handed to the family during the meeting. He said these images were an important sign for the relatives that Aung San Suu Kyi is alive and is fundamentally able to make contact with the outside world. De Baecque stressed at the same time that a single visit is not enough. „Now that hope must be matched by transparency, compassion and meaningful action," he added. He called for regular access for independent observers and humanitarian aid workers. International organizations have also long been pushing for unimpeded contact with political prisoners in Myanmar.

The military government under Min Aung Hlaing initially placed Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest after the coup; she was later sentenced to long prison terms in a controversial trial. Human rights organizations accuse the junta of holding the prisoner without adequate medical access and without regular contact with her family. The UN has repeatedly described the conditions of her detention as a matter of concern.

Reactions from the junta and the international community

The current step comes amid a broader discussion about the situation in Myanmar. For Aung San Suu Kyi's supporters, the one-time visit is not enough. They continue to demand her unconditional release as well as the release of thousands of other political prisoners. The National Unity Government, the elected but military-displaced counterweight to the junta, sees the ICRC visit as a tactical maneuver without political substance.

Outlook: Pressure on the military leadership is growing

The international response was cautiously positive. Western governments welcomed the access but stressed that lasting humanitarian contacts and a political process must follow. The Southeast Asian regional grouping ASEAN, which has spent recent years pushing in vain for mediation, called the visit a small but significant step.

De Baecque announced that he would continue to advocate publicly for regular visits and for the release of all political prisoners. Family members said they wanted to use the photos handed over as motivation to maintain international pressure.
