Investigators find 117 dead dogs on grounds of a no-kill animal shelter in California

In a barn, investigators found an area where dogs are believed to have been killed. Nearby lay more than 600 collars. Police have so far autopsied 70 bodies, many of which showed gunshot wounds; many with projectile fragments. The cause of death for many of the animals was apparently gunshot injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators review evidence

Sheriff William Honsal spoke of a "shocking scene." The local sheriff described it as a "horrific crime scene," according to CNN. "These investigations are just at the beginning," Honsal said. "A tremendous amount of data must be analyzed, witnesses interviewed, and evidence examined," the sheriff explained.

Facility's no-kill promise

The shelter, called "Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary," describes itself as a so-called no-kill shelter. On its website, a private animal rescue station in California describes itself as a "no-kill" facility – behind this is the promise that animals will not be euthanized due to lack of space, age, illness, or poor chances of being placed.

The operator, Shannon Miranda, rejects the allegations. "We don't kill animals just to make space," but acknowledges "rare exceptions." Shannon Miranda stated that reports had painted "an incomplete and in some respects inaccurate picture of our work." The goal, she said, was to "rescue as many animals as possible safely."

Unaccounted fate of more than 700 animals

According to police, the facility has taken in 900 animals since the beginning of 2025, but only 116 have been adopted. The whereabouts of more than 700 animals is unaccounted for. However, during the period in question, only 116 dogs were adopted; more than 700 animals were unrecorded. Additionally, 600 collars were secured on the property.

No charges have been filed so far. Investigators continue to review evidence and witness statements. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office announced that it would inform the public of further progress.
