Strait of Hormuz, April 18, 2026 Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats opened fire on a supertanker carrying Iraqi crude oil in the Strait of Hormuz without warning, according to the British maritime security authority UKMTO, as Tehran declared the strategic waterway "fully closed" in retaliation for U.S. sanctions.

Attack Details and Immediate Aftermath

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the captain of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) described an unprovoked assault by two Iranian Revolutionary Guard patrol boats approximately 37 kilometers northeast of Oman. The tanker was transporting two million barrels (272,000 metric tons) of Iraqi crude at the time of the attack.

"Without prior warning, the boats fired on the tanker," the UKMTO stated, corroborating the captain's account. The incident marks the first direct naval engagement against commercial shipping in the strait since Iran's previous blockade threats in 2025.

Iranian state media later broadcast a maritime alert declaring: *"Achtung an alle Schiffe: Wegen des Versäumnisses der US-Regierung, ihre Verpflichtungen in den Verhandlungen zu erfüllen, erklärt der Iran die Straße von Hormus wieder für vollständig geschlossen."* ("Attention all vessels: Due to the U.S. government's failure to fulfill its obligations in negotiations, Iran declares the Strait of Hormuz fully closed again.")
