ATHENS, Greece — April 30, 2026 Israel intercepts Gaza aid flotilla near Crete Israeli forces intercepted a humanitarian aid flotilla attempting to break the maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip near Crete overnight Wednesday into Thursday, detaining crews and activists onboard, organizers said.
Flotilla Intercepted Far from Gaza
Activists sailing on dozens of boats attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip reported that Israeli forces intercepted them near the southern Greek island of Crete. According to organizers, the interception occurred more than 600 miles from Gaza, marking what they called an "unprecedented escalation."
Flotilla organizers said in a press release: "Israel's actions … mark a dangerous and unprecedented escalation, the abduction of civilians in the middle of the Mediterranean, over 600 miles from Gaza, in full view of the world." Israel's foreign ministry confirmed that the IDF had taken control of more than 20 boats with approximately 175 activists onboard.
