The Ivorian national football team has reached the knockout round of a World Cup for the first time in its history with a 2:0 victory against Curaçao on Thursday (local time).

For the Ivory Coast, which is among the established teams in African football, reaching the round of 16 at a final tournament organized by world governing body FIFA had previously remained an unattainable goal. Even in previous tournament appearances, the team had always been eliminated in the group stage. The victory against the Caribbean selection from Curaçao, an island with around 150,000 inhabitants, now made the historic leap perfect.

Curaçao as stubborn underdog

The team built around the offensive axis of Nicolas Pépé, who is under contract in Europe with Villarreal, went into the match as the clear favorite. Curaçao, which had qualified for a World Cup final tournament for the very first time, defended deep and lurked for counterattacks. The underdogs kept the match open for long stretches, acted in an organized manner defensively, but offensively too rarely found the way into the opposing penalty area.
