TEHRAN, Iran — May 10, 2026
Nobel Peace laureate and activist Narges Mohammadi was hospitalized in Tehran after collapsing twice in prison, her foundation confirmed Sunday, as advocates called for her permanent release from an 18-year sentence.
Mohammadi, 53, was transferred to a hospital on May 1 after losing consciousness twice in prison, according to her foundation. The transfer followed days of pleas from her family and supporters, who described her condition as critical.
Health Crisis and Hospitalization
Since being admitted to the Zanjan hospital's cardiac care unit, Mohammadi's blood pressure has fluctuated dangerously between extremely low and high levels. Her brother reported she requires oxygen support and is unable to speak.
"I can breathe lightly," her brother told The Associated Press in a message. The family attributes her deteriorating health to beatings during her arrest and inadequate medical care in prison.
