Background: Three stints as national team coach
Following Mexico's 2-3 round-of-16 loss to England at the World Cup, Javier Aguirre confirmed his departure as head coach of the Mexican national team. Speaking at the Azteca Stadium, the 67-year-old said the farewell was final and that he was leaving the role on good terms. „Ich gehe mit Stolz“, Aguirre said, according to translated remarks. Even before the tournament, it had already been announced that Márquez would take over once Aguirre's tenure came to its planned end.
The round-of-16 match against England was played at the Azteca Stadium, one of the venues for the 2026 World Cup finals, which are being hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. As a co-host, Mexico was thus eliminated in the round of the last 16. The match ended 2-3 after the English side came from behind following an early concession. For Aguirre, it was his third stint as Mexico's national team coach.
