Update from 9 June 2026: Kai Wegner has been confirmed as the CDU's lead candidate roughly three and a half months before the Berlin election. The nomination came with a strong but not unanimous show of support and was overshadowed by renewed scrutiny of his political judgment.

Wegner received 252 of 272 cast votes, or 92.6 percent, in a secret ballot. The result was a personal victory for the 53-year-old, but it was lower and more contested than his previous nominations. In November 2022, his renomination had drawn no opposing candidate and only a single abstention in a vote by show of hands. In 2021, he had been chosen as the CDU's leading candidate with around 90 percent in a secret ballot.

The result was not a foregone conclusion. Wolfram Wickert, a delegate from the Mitte district association, unexpectedly declared a rival candidacy at the conference. Wickert justified his challenge by saying, "Die CDU brauche einen anderen Spitzenkandidaten." The internal dissent reflected unease over recent political turbulence in the capital.

Wegner used his acceptance speech to frame the coming election as existential for the city. "Ich glaube, diese Wahl ist eine Schicksalswahl," he told delegates, adding: "Ich will Regierender Bürgermeister bleiben - was denn sonst!" He added: "Es geht ums Ganze. Dafür braucht es eine CDU in der Verantwortung."

On policy, Wegner focused on housing and infrastructure. He said: "Wir haben geliefert. Die Verwaltungsreform ist beschlossen," and cited 80,000 newly built apartments in the current legislative period as a housing market achievement. He categorically ruled out expropriations: "Mit mir wird es Enteignungen von Wohnraum in Berlin definitiv nicht geben. Ich schließe das kategorisch aus."

He also announced his support for extending the A100 motorway. "Wir werden den 17. Bauabschnitt der A100 realisieren!" Wegner said, citing the completion of the 16th section as the right move. He added: "Wir müssen mehr bauen." Looking back at the coalition's work, he said: "Wir sind erfolgreich gewesen. Es waren drei gute Jahre für Berlin."

What's new since the previous version

Wegner's nomination is the headline development since the prior reporting cycle. Beyond the 92.6 percent result, the new information concerns two political vulnerabilities he now faces heading into September. The first is the unresolved controversy over his behavior during a major power outage earlier in 2026, when he did not appear in the affected districts on the first day and initially did not mention that he had played tennis during the incident. Critics say the full timeline of his movements that day has not been explained.
