Opposition politicians and independent political activists object that the government diverted the funds specifically for West's appearance from the state budget's emergency fund. According to the critics, the sum of 4.2 million euros was approved without regular tendering procedures and parliamentary oversight. They see it as a sign of the Rama government's growing departure from the rule-of-law standards.

Premier Rama rejects the criticism, calling his opponents "Krähen und Raben" who want to hold back Albania's development. The investment in infrastructure, tourism and international marketing, he says, is a long-term one. Culture Minister Blendi Gonxhja called West a "großen Künstler" and pointed to the cultural value of the event.

On the domestic policy front, the Rama government has been under pressure for months: the economic situation of many citizens is strained, inflation remains high, and many public services are chronically underfunded. Against this backdrop, the short-term allocation of millions from an emergency fund for a single concert strikes many observers as a political signal – either as a commitment to international openness or as a symbol of an increasingly erratic fiscal policy.

Economic risks and political symbolism

Economic analysts in Tirana point out that the projected 100 million euros in revenues would only be realistic if the concert actually goes ahead without any major incidents. Otherwise, the government risks reputational damage that would extend beyond the direct costs. Whether the million-euro investment ultimately pays off or becomes a political boomerang should become clear no later than after the concert.

Even within the governing party's own ranks, isolated critical voices have emerged. Several mayors of Albanian cities have publicly distanced themselves and pointed to the precarious situation in their municipalities. They fear that expenditure on the concert will crowd out measures in the areas of health, education and infrastructure.

International perception and foreign policy tensions

International media are watching developments in Tirana with growing interest. While some Western tabloids report the concert as a quirky news item, others are asking about the political background to the invitation. The Albanian government increasingly finds itself cast as an outlier that deliberately positions itself against the consensus of European partner countries.

From circles close to Rama, it is said that the prime minister personally invited West in order to position Albania as a country that offers artists a stage even when others disinvite them. This reading meets sharp resistance from cultural figures in the country: they see it as a relativization of antisemitic positions and call for a clearer line of demarcation.

Public mood and security arrangements

On the streets of Tirana, feelings are mixed: many younger Albanians are open to the concert and see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a world star in their own country. Older citizens as well as representatives of the country's Jewish community, by contrast, express incomprehension and in some cases open indignation.

According to the government, security arrangements for the concert are extensive. Additional police forces have been deployed around the stadium to contain possible protests and riots. The Interior Ministry said it was also in contact with partner agencies internationally.

Parallel to the concert, several NGOs have announced that they will hold vigils and information events on the margins of the event. They want to draw attention to the dangers of antisemitism and historical revisionism. The government has authorized these gatherings, but stresses that the safety of concertgoers is the top priority.
