The Albanian government under Prime Minister Edi Rama has at short notice allocated around 4.2 million euros from the state budget's emergency fund to prepare a stadium in Tirana for a Kanye West concert – a move that opposition politicians and activists have sharply criticized.

Background: A stadium for a single concert

The stadium on the outskirts of the Albanian capital Tirana, specially prepared by the government for the concert, is being readied around the clock, according to Rama. As the head of government wrote on Facebook, 3,500 workers would be laboring day and night to complete the facility in time. Rama had personally assured the US rapper that the concert would take place in Albania despite the international headwind.

Even before the concert, there are signs of international support: according to Rama, around 25,000 tickets have been sold to visitors from approximately 80 countries. The government is hoping for revenues of around 100 million euros, from hotels, restaurants and tourism, among other sources. On social networks, however, numerous users accuse the government of spending millions on a single concert while money is lacking elsewhere in the country for public tasks.
