VATICAN CITY, April 23, 2026 Pope Leo XIV has reaffirmed the Vatican’s opposition to formalized blessings for same-sex couples, emphasizing that the Catholic Church should focus on larger issues like justice and religious freedom rather than divisive debates over sexual morality.

Vatican Clarifies Position on Same-Sex Blessings

The Pope’s remarks came during his return flight from a 10-day trip to Africa, where he visited Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. Addressing journalists aboard the plane, he reiterated that the Holy See disagrees with extending formal blessings to homosexual couples or those in “irregular situations” beyond what his predecessor, Pope Francis, had permitted in late 2023.

“The Holy See has made it clear that we do not agree with the formalized blessing of couples—in this case homosexual couples or couples in irregular situations—beyond what was allowed by Pope Francis when he said that everyone can receive a blessing,” Leo said.

The statement was a direct response to Cardinal Reinhard Marx, former head of the German Bishops’ Conference, who recently authorized blessings for same-sex couples in his diocese of Munich and Freising. The Pope’s unusually sharp rebuke underscores tensions between the Vatican and progressive factions within the Church, particularly in Germany.
