On Sunday, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Canadian Grand Prix on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, securing his fourth consecutive Formula 1 victory and extending his championship lead to 43 points.
Antonelli’s victory marked the fifth Grand Prix win in five weekends for the Mercedes team, underscoring its dominance this season. The 19-year-old Italian moved 43 points clear of Russell in the drivers’ standings.
The race was decided when Russell, who started from pole position, suffered a sudden engine failure while leading on lap 30. He was visibly frustrated, throwing his gloves to the ground after parking his stricken car.
Russell had engaged in a tense, 30-lap duel with Antonelli before his retirement. The pair had narrowly avoided a collision earlier when Antonelli made a braking mistake and almost hit the back of Russell’s car.
