King Charles III arrived in the Caribbean on Tuesday, beginning a royal visit that comes amid growing demands for Britain to acknowledge slavery and support reparations for descendants of enslaved people.
The king was greeted by Governor-General Dame Cynthia A. Pratt and Prime Minister Philip Davis. During the reception, he wore a light grey suit and sunglasses.
The visit takes place against sustained pressure for the British government to do more on the legacy of colonial slavery. Within Caricom, the Caribbean Community, the demand for reparations has become a central issue in debates about historical justice, accountability and economic inequality.
Reparations at the center of the regional agenda
Caricom Secretary-General Carla Barnett said the Caribbean has consistently presented reparations as a question of justice, recognition, accountability and transformation. She also linked the issue to the future of descendants of enslaved people.
