A 16-year-old former student of a Gymnasium in Schongau in Upper Bavaria is in pre-trial detention following a knife attack on the school grounds, on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder.

The Munich General Prosecutor's Office is investigating the teenager for "two counts of attempted murder in concurrence with dangerous bodily harm," as the authority announced. He is alleged to have seriously injured two 13-year-old female students with a knife on the school grounds on Wednesday. "He is alleged to have seriously injured two 13-year-old girls with a knife on the school grounds on Wednesday," the investigators said.

Initially, an amoklauf (rampage killing) was suspected. After the attack, the knife, a pistol, and ammunition were secured. According to dpa information, the firearm was found in a backpack that the 16-year-old had placed on the schoolyard in the vicinity of the crime scene after his attack. The teenager had pointed this out to the officers himself after his arrest. The 16-year-old stated that he had obtained the weapon on the darknet. The knife is said not to have been a household knife in any case.
