The Left Party is considering a constitutional challenge against the new law on basic income support for job seekers, which came into force on Wednesday, according to its chairwoman Ines Schwerdtner.
According to the federal government, the former benefit "Bürgergeld" is now called "Grundsicherung für Arbeitssuchende" (Basic Income Support for Job Seekers). The reform increases the pressure on recipients to accept a job. "If recipients do not cooperate, the benefit can be reduced monthly or even cut entirely," according to government circles.
Schwerdtner announced the move to Karlsruhe on the TV channels RTL and ntv. "We are now examining a constitutional complaint, because the Federal Constitutional Court already ruled in 2019 that completely sanctioning people actually violates our constitution," the party chairwoman said on the program "Frühstart." She referred to a 2019 ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, which in her view classifies total sanctions as unconstitutional.
