Birmingham, 14 August 2026

German decathlete Leo Neugebauer has won the gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, while discus thrower Steven Janssen took bronze in the same competition.

Already on the second day of competition in the decathlon, Neugebauer had put himself in a promising position with a strong performance. With consistent performances across all disciplines, he steadily extended his lead and left the competition behind. In the end, he secured a commanding overall victory that underscored the outstanding form of the German all-rounder.

For the German Athletics Federation, the title is an important success on the European stage. German athletes have repeatedly made headlines at international championships – but a European Championship gold in the decathlon, the king of disciplines in athletics, holds a special significance. Neugebauer's performance is therefore also seen as a confirmation of the domestic training work.
