Lidl Austria Recalls Frozen Berries Due to Possible Norovirus Contamination

Noroviruses are the most common cause of gastrointestinal illnesses in humans. An infection typically manifests through projectile vomiting and severe diarrhea, often accompanied by nausea and abdominal cramps. Children, older people, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

What Noroviruses Can Cause

The company Jütro Tiefkühlkost GmbH & Co. KG apologizes "bei allen Betroffenen für die entstandenen Unannehmlichkeiten." Both Lidl Austria and the manufacturer are working with the responsible authorities to clarify the cause of the possible contamination.

Consumers who have purchased a corresponding package can return it to any Lidl store. According to the announcement, the purchase price will be fully refunded even without presenting a receipt. Disposal via household waste is also recommended if returning to a store is not possible.

For questions, Lidl Austria's customer service is available at the toll-free phone number 0800/500 810. The hotline can be reached Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The company is also providing information through its own channels and notices posted in stores.

Frozen fruits have repeatedly been a source of norovirus outbreaks in the past, as the virus can survive even at very low temperatures. Sufficient heating of the berries before consumption — for example by cooking or baking — kills the pathogens. Raw frozen berries should therefore be avoided especially by sensitive groups of people.

The authorities recommend drinking plenty of fluids in case of symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, and to seek medical help if complaints persist. The announcement does not include specific information on how many packages have already been sold or whether illnesses have been reported so far.
