Berlin, April 17, 2026 The Luftverkehrsverband (German Aviation Association) in Berlin has warned of potential flight cancellations across Europe and Germany due to a looming kerosene shortage, exacerbated by supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
Supply Chain Crisis Deepens
A significant portion of Europe’s kerosene imports originates from the Middle East, where ongoing conflict has damaged critical oil facilities. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, has become a bottleneck for fuel supplies. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has flagged concerns over dwindling reserves, with the price of kerosene more than doubling since the start of the conflict.
Asian airports have already felt the pinch, refusing additional flights for weeks due to fuel shortages. Experts warn that Europe could face similar disruptions if the situation persists. Gabriel Felbermayr, CEO of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (Wifo), predicts significantly higher costs for air travelers, which could dampen demand and lead to fewer flight connections.
Airlines Brace for Impact
Airlines are scrambling to mitigate the crisis, reviewing routes and drafting contingency plans. While no concrete cancellations of holiday flights have been announced yet, industry insiders acknowledge that the situation remains volatile. The Branchenverband BDL (German Aviation Industry Association) has urged carriers to prepare for potential operational challenges.
