A strike by Lufthansa flight attendants has begun, disrupting operations and leading to the cancellation of more than 520 flights across the airline’s network.
The walkout, called by the UFO union, affects approximately 20,000 cabin crew members and is set to last until 22:00 on the same day. Lufthansa has preemptively canceled hundreds of flights in response, while its regional subsidiary, Lufthansa Cityline, and other international affiliates scramble to mitigate the impact. This marks the third major labor action at the airline this year, following two earlier strikes by pilots.
Strike Demands and Union Criticism
The UFO union has sharply criticized Lufthansa for failing to address working conditions for nearly 19,000 flight attendants or improve the social plan for around 800 employees at Lufthansa Cityline. A union spokesperson confirmed the strike, emphasizing the unresolved grievances that prompted the walkout.
Lufthansa’s management has announced countermeasures but has not detailed specific concessions to the union’s demands. The airline’s decision to cancel flights in advance reflects the anticipated severity of the disruption. The strike’s timing, during peak travel hours, is expected to cause significant inconvenience for passengers, particularly on domestic and short-haul routes.
