Berlin, April 16, 2026

Luigi Pantisano, the 46-year-old vice-chair of the Left Party’s parliamentary group, has announced his candidacy to succeed outgoing co-leader Jan van Aken, who is stepping down for health reasons.

Leadership Transition and Party Stability

Pantisano’s bid comes as the Left Party navigates a leadership transition following van Aken’s decision to withdraw from his role. Van Aken had served as co-chair alongside Ines Schwerdtner since late 2024, when the duo was elected to lead the party in a shared leadership model. Their tenure saw the party stabilize after a period of internal turbulence, with Pantisano noting, *«Die Linke hat sich mit Jan und Ines erneuert und stabilisiert.»* (*"The Left Party has renewed and stabilized itself with Jan and Ines."*)

The party has also seen significant growth under their leadership, with more than 70,000 new members joining, according to Pantisano. This resurgence was further cemented by the Left Party’s return to the Bundestag in the 2025 federal election, where it secured 8.8% of the vote.

Pantisano’s Background and Vision

A prominent figure within the party, Pantisano has emphasized his personal story as part of his candidacy. His parents immigrated to Germany from Italy in 1979, seeking better opportunities for their four children. This narrative of migration and upward mobility aligns with the Left Party’s broader focus on social justice and equality.
