A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Calabria, in southern Italy, at 00:12 on Tuesday, June 2, according to the Austrian Seismological Service (GeoSphere Austria).
The seismic event was registered at 00:12 local time with an epicenter at sea and a focal depth of approximately 250 kilometers, as reported by the Austrian Seismological Service (GeoSphere Austria). Both the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) placed the magnitude at 6.2, while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) slightly lowered it to 6.1.
The closest coastal town to the epicenter is Paola, located a little over three hours by car south of Naples. The exceptional depth of the hypocenter, combined with the marine location of the epicenter, leads seismologists to consider material damage on dry land unlikely.
