Major police operation in Solingen-Ohligs: Police investigate after reports of gunfire

Injured person and rescue operation

During the operation, an emergency doctor and an ambulance were requested according to information from the forces. One person was injured according to initial findings. The police were unable to provide details on the exact nature and severity of the injury as of late morning, as the WDR report indicated.

Residents also reported that they had seen people fleeing from the area of the suspected crime scene. These observations were not independently confirmed by the police at first. The broadcaster referenced in its reporting conversations with residents as well as an inquiry to the Wuppertal police, which is responsible for the case.

Jurisdiction and findings so far

The operation continued into late morning. WDR reported the incident on WDR.de on 29 July 2026 at 09:36. Further background – such as the possible number of persons involved or a motive – was not initially known. The Wuppertal police did not comment beyond the police operation on Wednesday morning.

The Ohligs district is part of the Bergisches city of Solingen. The region has repeatedly been the scene of police investigations in the past, without the current incidents being directly linked to those. The police announced that further information would be released during the course of the day.

Reactions in the district

Eyewitnesses told WDR that the gunfire had been audible in broad daylight in a busy residential area. A police spokesperson noted that the investigation was at a very early stage. Pedestrians and employees of surrounding shops had cautiously moved away from the scene after the initial reports.

Security circles emphasized that in major situations like this, securing the scene and interviewing witnesses take priority initially. Only thereafter can reliable statements about the sequence of events and possible background be made.

According to the police, an initial assessment of the operation was to be released in the afternoon. Until then, the investigators asked the public to report any information from the area of the incident to the responsible criminal investigation department.
