New York, April 27, 2026 Jay Bryant pleads guilty in Jam Master Jay murder
A 52-year-old man has pleaded guilty to his role in the 2002 killing of Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay, bringing partial closure to a decades-old case that had remained unresolved for years.
Guilty Plea and Confession
Jay Bryant admitted in federal court on Monday that he facilitated the murder of Jason Mizell, the legendary DJ known as Jam Master Jay. Bryant stated he was connected to individuals involved in a cocaine deal with Mizell and admitted to helping them gain access to the recording studio where the shooting occurred.
"I helped them kill Jason Mizell by helping them gain entry to the recording studio," Bryant told the court. He also acknowledged his awareness of the violent intent behind the plan, saying, "I knew a gun was going to be used to shoot Jason Mizell."
Prosecutors presented evidence linking Bryant to the crime scene, including DNA found on a hat inside the studio and witness accounts placing him at the building around the time of the murder. Bryant further admitted, "I knew that what I was doing was wrong and a crime." His confession adds a new layer to a case that had previously seen two other men convicted before one was later cleared.
Legal Consequences and Sentencing
Bryant, now 52, faces a prison sentence ranging between 15 and 20 years for the murder, in addition to unrelated drug and gun charges to which he had already pleaded guilty. His sentencing will mark a significant milestone in a case that has spanned more than two decades.
