Zürich, Switzerland — April 14, 2026
FC Zürich has announced that Marcel Koller, former Austrian national team manager and most recently coach of Al Ahly, will take over as head coach starting in the summer of 2026. The club also confirmed the departure of current head coach Dennis Hediger, with Carlos Bernegger serving as interim manager until Koller’s arrival.
Koller’s Storied Career
Marcel Koller brings a wealth of experience to FC Zürich, having managed the Austrian national team from 2011 to 2017. Under his leadership, Austria qualified for the 2016 European Championship, marking a significant achievement for the team.
Before his international managerial role, Koller enjoyed a distinguished playing career, featuring in over 500 matches for Grasshoppers. During his time with the Swiss club, he secured seven league titles and five domestic cups, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s most successful players.
Recent Success with Al Ahly
Koller’s most recent coaching stint was with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he led the team to both the league title and the African Champions League in 2023 and 2024. His success in Africa further solidified his reputation as a top-tier manager capable of delivering trophies.
FC Zürich, currently struggling in the Swiss Super League and sitting third from last, will be hoping Koller can replicate his winning formula. The club’s decision to bring in a coach with such a proven track record signals their ambition to climb the league table and compete for silverware.
