Cartels fight over smuggling routes in Oaxaca

In the Oaxaca region, drug cartels are waging a fierce battle over smuggling routes. According to security authorities, among those active there are the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel and the Sinaloa cartel, both competing for markets and transportation routes.

The case is part of a wave of violence that has gripped Mexico for years. Since the government launched a military operation against organized crime in 2006, more than 350,000 people have been killed in the country. Among them are nearly 100 mayors.

Violence in the context of Mexico's drug war

As recently as February 2026, more than 70 people died in fighting during the arrest and death of a powerful drug boss in Mexico. Violence between the cartels, as well as between security forces and criminal groups, has continued since then.

The killing of the mayor comes at a politically sensitive time for Mexico: the country is co-hosting a historically large FIFA World Cup together with the United States and Canada. The tournament opened on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, one day before the article's publication on June 14, 2026.

Background: Violence against local politicians in Mexico

The background of the attack on Bravo Martínez remains unclear. Neither the Attorney General's Office nor PAN has so far provided information on a possible motive or suspects. A direct connection to the cartel conflict in the region has likewise not been officially confirmed.

International agencies such as AFP and dpa reported on the incident, citing the Oaxaca Attorney General's Office. The Mexican federal government initially did not comment publicly on the attack.
