The mayor of the small town of San Miguel Amatitlán in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez, was killed in an armed attack.
Governor and party condemn the act
The Oaxaca Attorney General's Office confirmed the mayor's death. It provided no further details on the course of events, possible perpetrators, or the exact time of the attack. According to the Attorney General's Office, police presence in the region was reinforced and a special operations unit was dispatched to search for the attackers.
Salomón Jara condemned the act of violence, writing on the online service X: "In Oaxaca, we will not allow violence to triumph over the law or the will of our communities."
The PAN party, to which Bravo Martínez belonged, also issued a statement. It said: "An attack on the life of a democratically elected official represents a direct assault on peace, institutions, and the will of the people." The party added: "We must not accept these incidents as normal, nor allow fear to undermine political participation and public service. Justice and the rule of law must prevail."
