Verstappen gets off to a slow start

Max Verstappen found his rhythm only gradually in the Red Bull and ultimately had to settle for the fourth-fastest time (+0.281 seconds). After early difficulties, however, the Dutchman noticeably improved, which should give his team hope for the rest of the weekend.

Lewis Hamilton, winner of the previous Grand Prix in Barcelona, was not yet fully at ease in the Ferrari in ambient temperatures of 31 degrees Celsius and track temperatures of 51 degrees Celsius. The Briton classified with a gap of 0.665 seconds in fifth place. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc took sixth place immediately behind him.

Norris slowed by hydraulic issue

Incidents were caused by Lando Norris, who was only able to go out on track a quarter of an hour before the end of the one-hour session. The cause was a hydraulic leak on the Briton's MCL39, which had to be repaired by the mechanics in the garage. In the end, the reigning world champion managed only seventh place.
