Bergerac, July 11, 2026

The Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier won the eighth stage of the Tour de France from Perigueux to Bergerac over 180.4 kilometers in a bunch sprint, celebrating his second consecutive stage victory.

Merlier's second sprint coup

Merlier prevailed on Saturday in extreme heat ahead of the Eritrean Biniam Girmay and the Dutchman Olav Kooij. For the 33-year-old Soudal professional, it was his fifth Tour de France stage victory overall. As on the previous day, the Belgian was perfectly positioned by his Soudal-Quick-Step team and secured his second stage win of this race.

"Am Ende war ich umzingelt und wäre fast gecrasht und dann habe ich gedacht, das ist vorbei", said Merlier after his fifth Tour stage victory overall. In the finish, he then thought to himself that he would give everything and try anyway; that was at 250 meters.

Heat battle and turbulent finale

When breakaway rider Liam Slock of Team Lotto-Intermarché still held a one-minute lead over the peloton with ten kilometers to go, the main field grew increasingly restless. Merlier had to assert himself against several rivals in the hectic final phase, but ultimately edged out Girmay by a narrow margin.

Alongside Girmay and Kooij, the Belgian Jasper Philipsen, who had to settle for fourth place, also finished in the top five. The heat once again took a heavy toll on the riders. "Ich musste ständig kämpfen, bis zur letzten Minute. In dieser Hitze war es ein wirklich schwieriges Unterfangen", a visibly exhausted rider summed up the conditions.
