Medebach, 14 June 2026
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a key policy speech on the security situation on Saturday in Medebach in the Sauerland region at a public oath-taking by around 110 recruits of Panzer Brigade 21 "Lipperland," and called for a strengthening of the Bundeswehr.
Before hundreds of spectators at the Medebach market square, the recruits swore their oath on the constitution and on service for Germany. In his keynote address, Merz emphasized the social significance of the armed forces and referenced his own service more than 50 years ago. "er erinnere sich gut an sein eigenes Gelöbnis vor 50 Jahren", said the Chancellor according to dpa. At that time, there had been reservations about such public events; today one is standing on a market square, which shows that the Bundeswehr stands in the middle of society.
