Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Sunday that the federal government intends to strengthen its focus on the economy and will not be deterred by criticism of the black-red coalition.
Speaking at a cabinet retreat in Berlin, Merz pushed back against what he described as "massive criticism" of the coalition between his CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats, pledging that the government would press ahead with policies aimed at strengthening Germany's economy. The chancellor framed the criticism as a reason to stay the course rather than reconsider it, telling reporters that the federal government "knows what is right and good for Germany."
