Kyiv, October 4, 2026
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Saturday for a solidarity visit, to meet with the Ukrainian government and discuss the ongoing situation in the country.
Merz's visit comes at a time when Ukraine continues to suffer under attacks by Russian armed forces. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces are continuing "in response to terrorist actions by Ukrainian armed forces against the civilian population and civilian infrastructure of our country (Russia), systematically delivering targeted strikes against military targets in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities." Moscow's account stands in contrast to reports from Kyiv of attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Merz announced the trip at short notice. According to information from delegation circles, he is accompanied by representatives of the Bavarian state government, among others, as the trip was officially coordinated via Munich. During the approach to Kyiv, Ukrainian Air Force aircraft secured the airspace.
