This is Ecuador's fifth appearance at a World Cup. Following a 0:1 loss to Ivory Coast and a 0:0 draw with Curaçao, the subsequent upset of Germany gave the team a fresh boost. The Round of 16 result should ideally match the best performance in the federation's history: in 2006 in Germany, Ecuador was knocked out 0:1 by England in the Round of 16.

Mexico's Quarterfinal Drought Since 1986

For Mexico, there is more at stake than merely advancing. The last quarterfinal, whether at home or overall, dates back to 1986, when Aguirre himself was still an active player and the Mexicans were eliminated by Germany in Monterrey. Veteran Raúl Jiménez is also being singled out as a leader, since his experience is expected to carry weight in a tight knockout match.

Mexico's South American opponent, meanwhile, has shown that it can hold its own against highly fancied teams. The 2:1 win over Germany had an impact not only in sporting terms but also mentally. Coach Sebastián Beccacece is therefore likely to lean on the same structure that, despite scoring chances, was not incisive enough against Curaçao and only found validation through the DFB team's result.

Looking at the statistics, plenty favors Mexico: three wins to open the tournament, no goals conceded, plus the backing of a packed Azteca Stadium. Ecuador counters with the confidence surge following Germany's World Cup exit and the knowledge that the only previous World Cup meeting, in 2002, was lost 1:2 – a record that, in El Comercio's view, is due for correction from the Ecuadorian side.

Should Mexico clear the Ecuador hurdle, the tournament would take on yet another historic dimension for Aguirre and his team: for the first time in 40 years, Mexico would once again be in a World Cup quarterfinal – this time away from the stadium where, in 1970 and 1986, the journey ended.
