Modi announces harsh penalties for exam fraud in India

The day before, several thousand people again demonstrated in New Delhi under the leadership of the "Cockroach Party" (CJP). The protest movement, referred to as the "Cockroaches," has long been demanding reforms against corruption in education and has developed into a nationwide voice of discontent. Demonstrations also took place in other cities such as Mumbai.

Violence during the protests

According to police reports, at least 178 people were injured during the protests, including security forces. The announced harsh penalties are to be directed against organized fraud networks that are repeatedly involved in exam scandals. In recent years, numerous cases have come to light in which candidates achieved better results with the help of bribed supervisors, mobile devices, or leaked tasks. The government also announced stronger technical monitoring of exam centers.

Observers interpret Modi's move as an attempt to regain control of the situation. The protests are considered one of the biggest challenges for his government this year and hit the ruling party at a time when it is actually preparing for upcoming elections. Critics doubt, however, that mere threats of punishment will be sufficient to solve the structural problem of corruption in the education sector.

The Cockroach Party announced that it would continue its demonstrations until concrete reforms are implemented. These include the demand for an independent supervisory authority, stricter controls during exams, and the dismissal of those responsible. Modi also called on the demonstrators to remain calm and warned against further violence.

The government plans to set up a special commission in the coming weeks to investigate the allegations against criminal networks in the education sector. Whether these measures will be sufficient to end the protests remains to be seen. For millions of young Indians whose professional future depends on exam results, the credibility of the education system is the decisive question.

International attention to the protests is high, as India's exam system is regarded as a model for other emerging countries.
