Two US special envoys have arrived in Moscow to speak with the Russian leadership about the war in Ukraine, after President Putin left the delegation waiting throughout the previous day.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in the Russian capital on Friday. The trip comes amid ongoing international efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine and forms part of a broader diplomatic initiative by the US government.

The talks are taking place against a tense backdrop. According to consistent reports, President Putin made the two US emissaries wait all day while he participated via video link in the opening of a new Moscow metro line and a major oil terminal with a pipeline in Siberia. He also met senior candidates from the Kremlin party, United Russia, ahead of the parliamentary election scheduled for September 18 to 20.
