Musicians Cancel US 250th Anniversary Concerts Over Trump Ties, Milli Vanilli's Morvan Stands Firm

Shortly after the lineup was announced, several prominent acts withdrew. The canceling musicians stated the event, which claims to be non-partisan, had become too politically charged.

Among those who have pulled out are The Commodores, the former band of singer Lionel Richie; country music star Martina McBride; and Bret Michaels, the frontman of the rock band Poison.

A Wave of Cancellations

Michaels addressed his decision in a social media post. "Leider hat sich das, was uns als Feier unseres Landes präsentiert wurde, zu etwas deutlich Spaltenderem entwickelt, als ich ursprünglich zugesagt hatte," he wrote on Instagram.

Despite the cancellations, other artists are maintaining their scheduled appearances. Rappers Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida are still set to perform.

Also standing firm is Fabrice "Fab" Morvan, formerly of the pop duo Milli Vanilli. He told the online music and film magazine "Consequence": "Ich bin hier, um die Menschen zu unterhalten und zu vereinen, nicht um sie zu spalten."

Morvan's Decision and a Controversial Past

Morvan's commitment has drawn additional attention due to his group's infamous history. Milli Vanilli, produced by Frank Farian, achieved massive success in the late 1980s with their disco-pop hit "Girl You Know It's True," which sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

The duo won a Grammy in 1990, but the award was revoked after it was revealed that Morvan and his bandmate Robert "Rob" Pilatus had lip-synced to the voices of other singers. The scandal is considered one of the biggest frauds in music history.

The actual voices behind Milli Vanilli were Jodie and Linda Rocco, Brad Howell, John Davis, and Charles Shaw. These original singers have now publicly distanced themselves from the Washington D.C. performance in a post on platform X.

Morvan later told "VIBE" magazine that he had no idea the concert series was perceived as a Trump-aligned event. His management stated the rapper is proud to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
