Houston, June 14, 2026
National team coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the return of Manuel Neuer to the German starting lineup against Curaçao 17 hours before the kickoff of the first World Cup group match.
At a press conference on Saturday evening (local time) in Houston, Nagelsmann said: "und Manu wird beginnen." The 40-year-old Neuer has overcome his calf problems and, two years after his retirement from the national team, is back in goal for four-time world champion Germany for his 125th international appearance. It is his fifth World Cup tournament overall.
The opponent is the football team from the Caribbean, which has qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time. The team is considered to be strongly influenced by the Netherlands and, according to Nagelsmann, consists largely of unknown "No-Name" players. He compared the sporting situation to a DFB-Pokal match and spoke of "David against Goliath".
