Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, May 5, 2026

At least nine people were killed in a Russian attack on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. The assault occurred despite a two-day ceasefire announced by Russia, which was planned for May 8 and 9.

Escalation Despite Ceasefire Announcements

The Russian government, under President Vladimir Putin, had ordered a two-day ceasefire to mark Victory Day in World War II. Shortly afterward, Ukraine also declared a truce. Nevertheless, heavy attacks struck Zaporizhzhia, resulting in nine deaths and numerous injuries.

The attacks raise questions about compliance with agreed ceasefires. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of "naked cynicism." The exact circumstances of the attacks remain unclear, but the escalation highlights the fragility of current ceasefire agreements.
