North Korea plans to deploy 155-mm self-propelled gun-howitzers near the border with South Korea, capable of striking Seoul, as part of a military buildup confirmed by state media.
Military Buildup Along the Border
North Korea is preparing to station advanced artillery systems, including 155-mm self-propelled gun-howitzers, in the southern border area within the year. These weapons are capable of reaching Seoul, which lies approximately 40 to 50 kilometers from the border. The deployment aligns with leader Kim Jong Un’s recent inspection of munitions factories producing these artillery systems.
Kim emphasized the strategic advantage of the new artillery, stating: "such a rapid extension of striking range and remarkable improvement of striking capability will provide a great change and advantage in the land operations of our army." The large-caliber rifled guns reportedly have a striking range exceeding 60 kilometers, placing South Korea’s capital within direct firing distance.
