Zürich, 25 May 2026
Norway clinched its first IIHF World Championship quarterfinal berth in 14 years with a commanding 4-1 win over 2024 champion Czechia in Zürich on Sunday, while the United States kept its knockout-round hopes alive by defeating Hungary 7-3.
Norway's Historic Breakthrough
The Norwegians, led by two goals from Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, delivered one of the tournament's biggest surprises by overwhelming the favored Czechs. Havard Östrem Salsten opened the scoring just three minutes into the game, and Brandsegg-Nygard doubled the lead four minutes later.
Czechia pulled one back through Jaroslvan Chmelar in the 16th minute of the first period, but that was as close as the former world champions would get. Norwegian goaltender Henrik Haukeland shut the door the rest of the way, frustrating the Czech offense repeatedly.
Martin Ronnild restored Norway's two-goal cushion early in the third period, and Brandsegg-Nygard added his second of the night to seal the 4-1 victory. The result lifted Norway past Czechia in the group standings and into a guaranteed quarterfinal position.
The last time Norway appeared in the World Championship quarterfinals was in 2012, when the tournament was co-hosted by Stockholm and Helsinki. The Scandinavian nation's return to the knockout stage marks a historic achievement for the program.
USA and Germany Take Care of Business
In the other key matchup of the day, the United States fulfilled its obligation with a 7-3 victory over Hungary. The Americans built a 4-0 lead by the midpoint of the game, with NHL superstar Matthew Tkachuk scoring before the first intermission and Ryan Leonard adding two goals.
Hungary showed resilience in the third period, with Csanad Erdely and Gabor Tornayai scoring to cut the deficit to two goals. However, the Americans never truly relinquished control, and Max Plante's goal with 27 seconds remaining made the final score 7-3.
The shot statistics told a clear story of American dominance, with the U.S. outshooting Hungary 48 to 17. Despite the comfortable margin, the Americans experienced some tense moments late in the game when the underdog Hungarians pushed back.
Germany also secured a required victory, defeating Great Britain 6-3. The Germans built a 3-0 lead after one period and ultimately saw six different players find the scoresheet. The win keeps Germany firmly in the hunt for a quarterfinal spot.
Relegation Drama
In the relegation battle, Slovenia defeated Italy 5-1 in a direct duel to avoid the drop. Italy took an early lead in the 23rd minute, but Slovenia shifted into a higher gear from the midpoint of the game onward and overwhelmed the promoted side.
The result confirmed Italy as the second team relegated to Division 1, following Great Britain. Slovenia's victory ensures their survival in the top division for another year.
Quarterfinal Scenarios
The day's results set up a dramatic final round of group-stage matches. The United States faces Austria in a direct duel for a quarterfinal ticket on Tuesday at 16:20 local time.
Austria's path to the knockout stage requires a regulation-time victory over the Olympic champion Americans. The Austrian team, which suffered defeats to Germany (2-6) and Finland (2-5) over the Pentecost weekend, still has a mathematical chance to advance.
Black-Wings forward Henrik Neubauer expressed belief in his team's chances ahead of the decisive matchup. "Ich glaube an uns," Neubauer said, signaling confidence despite the challenging task ahead.
Neubauer's Belief
The United States, as the defending champion, needs a regulation win against Austria to secure its place in the quarterfinals and leave Germany and Roger Bader's team behind in the race for the knockout round.
Canada, meanwhile, was pushed to the brink by a Scandinavian opponent before prevailing 6-5 in overtime. The narrow escape highlighted the competitive balance at this year's tournament.
What's Next
The quarterfinal field is taking shape, with Norway already confirmed and several traditional powers still battling for the remaining spots. Tuesday's final group-stage games will determine the complete knockout-round bracket.
