Nvidia and Corning Partner to Build Three U.S. Fiber Optic Factories for AI Infrastructure

The partnership underscores the critical role of optical fiber in modern AI systems, where speed and energy efficiency are paramount. Nvidia will integrate Corning’s glass fiber into its rack-scale AI platforms, leveraging the technology’s ability to transmit data as light through glass cables—far outpacing traditional copper wiring.

"AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout of our time — and a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinvigorate American manufacturing and supply chains," said a joint statement from the companies. The facilities will support Nvidia’s broader investments in AI infrastructure, including a $4 billion commitment to Coherent and Lumentum, firms specializing in converting data between optical and electrical formats.

Corning, a pioneer in optical fiber since 1970, has seen its optical communications segment become its largest and fastest-growing business. First-quarter net sales for the segment reached $1.85 billion, a 36% year-over-year increase, driven by surging demand for fiber products tied to AI data center construction.

Economic and Industrial Implications

The new factories are expected to bolster U.S. manufacturing capabilities at a time when global supply chains face increasing scrutiny. The project aligns with broader efforts to reshore advanced technology production, creating high-skilled jobs in North Carolina and Texas.

"What Nvidia is doing is nothing short of extraordinary, not just for the future of AI, but for the American advanced manufacturing workforce," remarked an industry analyst. The partnership also builds on Corning’s recent $6 billion long-term supply agreement with Meta, with two additional hyperscaler customers signing similar deals.
