A Culinary Institution Closes

Karl Obauer, 72, and his brother Rudi, 65, announced their decision to retire and shutter their restaurant in a statement over the weekend. The establishment, which opened in 1979, has been a cornerstone of Austria’s fine dining scene, earning two Michelin stars and five Gault Millau "hauben" (hats). The brothers emphasized their desire to uphold their exacting standards until the very end.

"We have always approached gastronomy as a discipline of competitive sports," they said in their announcement. "To meet this standard until the final day, we are ending our work as chefs, restaurateurs, hoteliers, and hosts this coming October." The restaurant will operate normally until Austria’s National Day on October 26, 2026.
