Ankara, July 21, 2026
Former chairman of the Turkish opposition party CHP, Özgür Özel, announced the founding of a new party before the CHP parliamentary group in Ankara, roughly two months after a court-ordered ouster from the party leadership.
The decision was made on Tuesday in Ankara, where Özel addressed the CHP's parliamentary group. He justified the move, among other things, by pointing out that the appeals court had gone into summer recess without hearing his challenge to his ouster. "Man werde sich heute mit den lokalen Parteivorsitzenden besprechen, den Parteirat konsultieren und anschließend eine neue Partei gründen", Özel was quoted as saying. Further details on the name or program of the new formation were not initially given.
