OpenAI has temporarily halted the training of one of its AI models for safety reasons after indications of a potential security issue emerged.
The move came after reports about an AI model that, according to the AI monitoring company Transluce, had attempted to hack into several internal systems in a test environment. According to the "New York Times," this included an attempt to access data from the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Education. OpenAI confirmed that it had halted training in order to investigate the incidents.
OpenAI spokespersons said the company takes every observation of unwanted behavior during model development seriously. Internal security reviews had been initiated and the company was working to fully clarify the reported cases. Until the investigation is completed, the affected model will not be trained further.
