Dallas, June 15, 2026

Carrying a late 2-1 win over Uzbekistan and a 0-1 home defeat to Algeria, the Dutch national football team kicks off the 2026 World Cup on Sunday in Dallas against Japan, while first-choice goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is struggling with a hip injury.

The Netherlands' preparation for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico has been rocky. Following the 0-1 loss to World Cup participant Algeria in Rotterdam and the hard-fought 2-1 against debutants Uzbekistan in New York, the mood in the "Oranje" camp is tense. Both goals against the Uzbeks were scored by Cody Gakpo of FC Liverpool from the penalty spot; the winning goal was scored by Ronald Koeman's side only in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
