US film editor Marcia Lucas, who won an Oscar in 1978 for editing "Star Wars," died of cancer in late May at the age of 80.
The industry magazine Variety reported this on Friday, citing the family's lawyer. Lucasfilm, the production company founded by her ex-husband George Lucas, joined the international film community in expressing its grief.
Marcia Lucas was born in California and trained as an editor in the 1960s. She worked on influential films of the 1970s, including Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and "New York, New York."
However, she experienced her most formative creative period alongside George Lucas, to whom she was married from 1969 to 1983. The couple had one daughter together. Marcia Lucas joined the post-production of the first "Star Wars" film after George Lucas realized the film needed a complete overhaul.
Together with co-editors Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch, she received the Oscar for Best Film Editing in 1978. The family honored her work in a statement as characterized by "emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity – a rare ability to find the truth of a scene and bring heart, momentum, and clarity to the screen."
According to George Lucas and actor Mark Hamill, it was Marcia Lucas's idea to have the character Obi-Wan Kenobi die on the Death Star. In the 2022 documentary series "Inside Star Wars," she confirmed that the idea of Obi-Wan dissolving and later speaking to Luke Skywalker as a disembodied voice also originated with her.
According to Variety, the iconic kiss between Luke and Princess Leia was kept in the film at her insistence. Marcia Lucas's judgment carried great weight with George Lucas; she was considered his "secret weapon of post-production" and, according to witnesses, gave the first "Star Wars" films an "Oscar-worthy polish."
She was barely involved in "The Empire Strikes Back" as she was caring for their daughter and early on declined the editing supervision. On "Return of the Jedi," she only joined after the first cut didn't work. According to the documentary series, she fundamentally reworked both the reunion of Luke and Obi-Wan and Darth Vader's ending, taking reshoots in a completely new direction.
According to other witnesses, the couple finally fell out during the post-production of "Return of the Jedi." Marcia Lucas wanted to divorce earlier, but George Lucas reportedly insisted on waiting until after the release of the third film.
After the separation, George Lucas cut off all contact, according to Marcia Lucas. "When I left him, he acted as if I never existed," she said. For decades, her contribution to the original trilogy remained undervalued. The documentary series "Inside Star Wars" is available on the streaming platform Joyn.
Marcia Lucas herself once described her talent with the words: "I have an innate ability to take good material and make it even better – and take bad material and make it at least passable."
