Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha has returned to the FC Bayern Munich squad after his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur expired, while a planned move to Sporting CP is threatening to fall through due to Munich's transfer fee demands.

Tottenham waives purchase option

João Palhinha was most recently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. However, the London club did not exercise the purchase option included in the contract, worth around 30 million euros, and instead signed two significantly more expensive alternatives for central midfield: Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham United for 99 million euros, and Sandro Tonali is set to follow from Newcastle United for even more money.

Palhinha made 45 competitive appearances for the Spurs, contributing seven goals and three assists. The 30-year-old bid farewell to the club's fans via an Instagram post: "Playing for Tottenham has profoundly shaped my life – not just professionally, but also personally – and I will carry that with me forever (…) London gave me more than just a professional career; it gave me a second home that I will always hold in my heart. With the utmost respect and gratitude, I say goodbye to you all."
