Bordeaux, France — May 14, 2026

French health officials have permitted the majority of passengers and crew to leave the cruise ship Ambition after a norovirus outbreak, restricting quarantine measures to approximately 50 confirmed cases.

Outbreak Response and Restrictions

Initially, authorities barred all 1,700 people aboard the Ambition from going ashore as a precautionary measure. The ship, which had sailed from Belfast and Liverpool, was placed under strict health protocols after reports of gastrointestinal illness emerged.

The restrictions were later narrowed to only those showing symptoms, with around 50 passengers and crew members now under medical supervision. Enhanced hygiene measures have been implemented onboard, including intensified cleaning and isolation protocols for the infected.

French officials emphasized that the outbreak was unrelated to a separate Hantavirus incident on another vessel, the Hondius. "Die französischen Behörden hatten betont, dass es keinen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Ausbruch an Bord des aus Belfast und Liverpool kommenden Kreuzfahrtschiffes und dem von einem Hantavirus-Ausbruch betroffenen Schiff 'Hondius' gebe," authorities stated.
