Pius Brotherhood Consecrates Bishops in Switzerland – Against the Express Will of the Pope

The Pius Brotherhood nonetheless proceeded with the consecration. According to the rules of Catholic canon law, an episcopal consecration without papal approval results in the immediate excommunication of all those involved. The Vatican had already made clear beforehand that the ceremony constituted a break with the Catholic Church and would „werde die sofortige Exkommunikation der Beteiligten zur Folge haben". This escalates a conflict that has occupied the Catholic world for decades.

The Break with Rome

The background to the rift is the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, which sought to modernize the Church's liturgy, open dialogue with other religions on equal footing, and give the faithful a greater role in the celebration of the Mass. The Pius Brotherhood, founded in 1970 by the French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who died in 1991, saw this as a departure from tradition and organized itself as a counter-movement. To this day, it celebrates its Masses entirely in Latin according to the old liturgy. Lefebvre had once mocked the post-conciliar Mass as an „Evangelische Messe" and a „Bastardritus".

The theological conflict has sharpened in recent years because the Brotherhood can no longer be regarded as a marginal splinter group. The religious scholar Jan Heiner Tück emphasized that it can no longer be dismissed as it could have been ten years ago: „Sie ist international vernetzt, sie sind auf den sozialen Medien sehr umtriebig und auch perfekt organisiert." In Germany as well, the community is attracting growing numbers according to its own accounts, including a striking number of young people. Just last weekend, the Brotherhood consecrated five young men as priests in Zaitzkofen near Regensburg in Bavaria, who are to serve in the future in growing parishes in Baden-Württemberg and run a primary school of the community in Memmingen in Upper Swabia.

Growing Attractiveness in Europe

In Écône, the theologian Michel Rion from the Brotherhood's seminary expressed the perspective of the traditionalist priests. He compared the Church to a leaky ship: „Die Kirche ist ein sinkendes Schiff, weil es Lecks hat und überall Wasser eindringt. Der Papst bemerkt das ja selbst. Man sieht ja, welche Schwierigkeiten er zum Beispiel in Deutschland hat, die Bischöfe auf den richtigen Kurs zu bringen. Wir sind als Piusbrüder nur eine kleine Armee. Wir versuchen einfach in aller Treue, die Lecks im Schiff abzudichten." With this, Rion articulated a position that defends the Brotherhood's self-conception as guardian of Catholic tradition against a Vatican perceived as accommodating.

Worldwide, the community counts more than 700 priests according to its own figures. It sees itself as particularly strongly rooted in France, from where a large share of the pilgrims traveled to Écône. With the consecration of four new bishops, the Brotherhood aims — according to observers' assessment — to further expand its spiritual and organizational infrastructure. The newly consecrated bishops are to confer consecrations in various countries in the future and secure the supply of the parishes.

Canonical Consequences

The immediate consequence is unambiguous under canon law: All bishops involved in the consecration — including the newly consecrated — as well as the consecrating superior are automatically excommunicated, unless the Pope lifts the sanction. Those affected are thereby outside the full communion of the Catholic Church, may not administer the sacraments, and no longer participate in the sacramental life of the Church. A lifting of the excommunication is possible only by the Pope himself, who has so far shown no sign of such a gesture.

The events in Switzerland also throw a spotlight on a deep-seated crisis of the Catholic Church in Germany. According to observers' assessment, the Pius Brotherhood benefits from the frustration of many Catholics over the reform course that has been controversially discussed for years. The conflict between Rome and the traditionalist community is thus not merely a liturgical dispute, but also a symptom of the tensions within worldwide Catholicism.

For Pope Leo XIV., the completed consecration represents a heavy burden in an already turbulent term of office. The Brotherhood has consciously set itself against the express wish of the Pope and thereby raised the long-smoldering dispute over the interpretation of the Second Vatican Council to a new level. The coming weeks will show whether the Vatican responds with canonical steps, offers of dialogue, or a mixture of both.
