Police shooting in Munich-Schwabing: 20-year-old seriously injured

Investigations by the State Office of Criminal Investigation

According to BR24, the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation (BLKA) has taken over the investigations. Due to the severity of the incident, the case was escalated within the hierarchy of the Bavarian police, it was stated. The Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office is also involved.

At the operation site in Schwabing, police special forces secured evidence. The area around Belgradstraße was cordoned off over a wide perimeter for several hours after the shots. Eyewitnesses reported a large deployment of patrol cars and emergency vehicles.

Cordon and evidence situation in Schwabing

The investigators initially made no statements about the identity of the injured man. The question of whether the shooting involved a case of self-defense or another scenario also remained open in the evening. The police announced further information for Wednesday.

Independently of the subsequent clarification of the facts, according to BR24 information, the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation stepped in, which usually takes over cases when police officers themselves have used a firearm. The goal is the most independent possible review of the incident.

Reactions in the neighborhood

In Schwabing, an inner-city district with dense residential buildings, shops, and restaurants, the operation in broad daylight caused concern. Residents reported that they had heard the bang clearly and had seen the helicopter over the neighborhood.

The Munich police asked residents to report any information from the vicinity of Belgradstraße and Clemensstraße to the Munich Police Headquarters or the BLKA. At the same time, people were asked to give the area a wide berth.

Police shootings resulting in injuries are rare in Bavaria and are always examined separately. It is standard practice that an investigation is initiated in parallel and that the responsible departmental section is not involved in its own investigations. In Munich, there have been isolated comparable incidents in recent years, each of which was reviewed by the public prosecutor's office.

Rare use of firearms in Bavaria

The Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it would conduct a comprehensive assessment of the matter after the police investigations have been completed. Until then, those involved – the injured person and the officers deployed – are not publicly identified.

For Wednesday, the police in Munich are planning a press conference at which the Chief of Police and a BLKA representative will jointly inform about the status of the investigations. Statements are also expected on how many shots were fired and how many officers were deployed.

The City of Munich set up a telephone information line for concerned citizens. The Munich City Hall hotline will be active on Wednesday morning. There was no reliable information available by evening regarding any possible background, motive, or reason for the operation.
