The co-chairman of the Police Union (Gewerkschaft der Polizei, GdP), Sven Hüber, resigned from his position with immediate effect on Tuesday after allegations from his time with the GDR border troops became public.
Background of the Resignation
In a statement released on Tuesday, Hüber announced that he would withdraw completely from the union's leadership. The stated reason was that he wanted to keep the GdP out of the ongoing proceedings. The Police Union is one of the largest professional associations in the German public sector and represents police employees at the federal level.
In his statement, Hüber pointed to several legal and judicial reviews he himself had initiated against the allegations. He announced his intention to take the dispute over the "täglich neuen, unhaltbaren" accusations to court.
