The Vienna Regional Court imposed pre-trial detention on a 21-year-old Syrian at noon on Thursday. He is alleged to have sexually abused a 16-year-old in Vienna-Donaustadt during the night leading into Monday.
Course of events and arrest
According to police, the 21-year-old and the girl had gotten into a conversation at Schwedenplatz early on Monday at around 4:45 a.m. On the way to the 16-year-old's residential address, the man reportedly drove to a secluded area and abused the teenager there. Police were able to identify the suspect through the evaluation of video recordings, as APA reported, citing investigators.
The arrest followed the analysis of corresponding footage that showed both the vehicle and the 21-year-old. APA reported subsequently on the more specific circumstances of the complaint and the timing of the arrest.
Pre-trial detention was imposed due to the risk of reoffending, as the Vienna Regional Court announced on Thursday. A judge saw a danger that the accused could commit further offenses. The imposition of pre-trial detention in such cases is provided for in the Austrian Code of Criminal Procedure when there is strong suspicion of an offense and a ground for detention such as flight risk, risk of tampering with evidence, or risk of reoffending.
