Cologne, Germany — April 22, 2026 German comedian and television host Carolin Kebekus has spoken out against the persistent stigma surrounding psychotherapy, arguing that greater accessibility and affordability would benefit society.
Psychotherapy Still Taboo, Says Kebekus
Carolin Kebekus believes that psychotherapy remains a taboo subject for many people. "Psychotherapie ist noch immer ein Tabu," she said, highlighting the societal reluctance to openly discuss mental health treatment. Kebekus, known for her candid commentary on social issues, emphasized the need to normalize conversations around mental health to reduce stigma.
She also pointed out that systemic barriers, such as reduced reimbursement rates for psychotherapeutic services, further discourage people from seeking help. A planned 4.5% reduction in reimbursement rates is particularly counterproductive, according to Kebekus. "Making psychotherapy more accessible and affordable would benefit society," she added.
Systemic Barriers and Discrimination
Kebekus raised concerns about discriminatory practices that affect individuals who have undergone therapy. In Germany, people with a history of psychotherapy may face restrictions when applying for certain civil servant positions, including teaching roles. This policy, she argued, perpetuates the stigma and discourages people from seeking necessary mental health support.
